May Lipstick Challenge

If you know me, you know I love a good challenge. Not like… some kind of adverse circumstance that I have to overcome (I mean, not that I don’t welcome those too) but like a specified set of guidelines that I have to utilize to do something. Kind of like mini goals I set out for myself. Like, 30 Day Challenges on Tumblr, or that clothing challenge I did back in December, or even like how I decided I was going to paint my nails in the birthstone of each month and post them on Instagram. Stuff like that.

I saw different variations of the “30 Day Lippie Challenge” around the internet, and I was intrigued. As we’ve already established, I like a good challenge. I also LOVE a good lipstick/ gloss/ crayon/ paint. But I suck at wearing them. And I really don’t like the word “lippie”. I don’t know why, but there you have it.

So I decided I would make my own version. Most of the ones I’ve seen essentially involve wearing a different lip product every day for a set number of days (usually thirty) and some have a catch like the boyfriend picks them out each day, they have to be posted on Instagram by a certain time, or the same brand can’t be used twice. I’m going to tweak it for myself. So here it is:

The May Lipstick Challenge:

  • I must wear a different lip product every day, at least five days a week. I would do every day by I know who I am and am certain that it wouldn’t happen.
  • Each product can only be used once but different shades of the same brand is fine.
  • A roundup has to be posted at the end of each week (by Sunday) documenting each product and accompanying “look”.
  • Any lip product (other than colourless lip chaps/ balms such as Aquaphor or Vaseline) counts, but Lipstick Challenge sounds better than “Lip Product Challenge” or “Lipstick/ Gloss/ Paint/ Colour/ etc Challenge” and I’ll be darned if I use the word “lippie” ever again after the end of this sentence.
  • The documentedproduct has to be worn ALL DAY. That means no putting it on to film a YouTube video and taking it off right after because I’m re-doing my makeup to make it look like I didn’t film four videos in one sitting. Not that I do that or anything…

Before we start, just a heads up that I don’t subscribe to the ‘discard after x months’ philosophy when it comes to beauty products. Unless it drastically changes texture/ smell, I’m gonna be using that bad boy until it finds itself in an empties blog post/ video! With that said, some of these products may be no longer available due to limited edition status or companies discontinuing shades/ product lines. I will do my best to link every product I use, but if there is no link, that means the product is no longer available. I’m truly sorry if that causes any inconvenience or frustration!

The point of this challenge for me is to start using products I don’t normally use or, in many cases, have never used before. I have gotten more adventurous with lipsticks (etc.) in the last year or so but I’m still not wearing a huge variety of them. So here we go!

Day 1: Tarte Lipsurgence in Energy.

I wanted to start off nice and simple… dipping my toe into the metaphorical water, if you will, instead of jumping into the deep end with a bold lip. Despite looking like a crazy hot pink gloss, this product claims to sync up with the PH levels of your lips to give the perfect colour for your lip chemistry. Or something like that. It does give a light rosy tint to my lips but you don’t really notice it from far away. This is the first of many products that I’ll wear in this challenge that came to me in a Sephora Favorites set (you can check out the blog post I wrote about that set HERE). I’ve worn it a few times but don’t reach for it on a regular basis although I do like it. It’s a pretty basic gloss and is perfect for the kind of day I was having on May 1st which involved no other makeup besides mascara. It’s not too thick and not too sticky. Of course, like all lip glosses, it doesn’t have much staying power so it had to be reapplied multiple times but because of the subtlety of it, totally not a big deal. Lip glosses are my favourite and most worn when it comes to lip-centric makeup and this is a good one!

(Also worn: mascara)

Day 2: Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment in Rosé

I got this guy in another Sephora set as well. At first I wasn’t a fan because I disliked the texture but I started using it again on Accutane (some situations were quite dire and I needed lip chap, stat!) and this guy came in handy. It’s not as moisturizing as Aquaphor or other dedicated lip moisture product, but it is nice. The one thing I dislike is that it’s not very forgiving since it is tinted. Nothing cute about having globs of that on the side of your mouth!

(Also worn: mascara)

Day 3: MAC Brave.

Every girl needs one MAC lipstick. And I have Brave… or had. I wore this to the Abbotsford Tulip Festival and it must have fallen out of my purse! It’s a beautiful mauvey pink colour and although I’m totally kicking myself, I’m not super heartbroken because I have a few similar shades in other brands. RIP MAC Brave… she’ll be pushing up daisies now… or, well, tulips.

(Also worn: concealer, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, brows)

Day 4: Nars Velvet Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita.

This guy came in a duo set along with Cruella for the Sephora free birthday gift a couple years ago. I really like the pinky brown shade and it’s a great formula. The packaging isn’t spectacular and I’m not sure if it is sharpen-able but it’s getting to the point where I’ll need to try! It’s a nice “my lips but better colour” and I recommend giving it a try!

(Also worn: mascara)

Day 5: Buxom Full-On Lip Cream in White Russian.

I told myself I wouldn’t use this in the first week but here we are. Buxom lip glosses are my favourite and White Russian is my second favourite shade of it, I actually have two! One was in a large Sephora Favorites set and the other was from a Give Me Some Nude Lip set that is still available. The first is almost gone and I keep in in my bag, and the other one sits on my vanity with all my other lip products. It’s the perfect level of glossiness, with a minty flavour and the best tingley feeling… plus apparently it’s lip-plumping so that’s cool too. I’m a big, big fan.

(Also worn: mascara)

So that’s the first week of my May Lipstick Challenge!! I didn’t step very far out of the box this week and played it pretty safe with the nude/ pink shades. I am bummed about the MAC lipstick but I do have a gift card from The Bay, so I think I’ll pick up a replacement… but perhaps try a different sort of shade!

Thanks so much for reading this post!! What is your go-to lipstick (/gloss / paint/ you get it by now haha)? I’d love to hear from you!
