The “What’s In My Bag” tag is one of the most prevalent prompts for bloggers and YouTubers. It’s a great one because it can be adapted for different kinds of people in different niches (makeup bag, school bag, camera bag etc) and it’s fun for the audience because you can tell a lot about someone by what they carry around with them all day!
So there is definitely no shortage of these kind of posts across the blogs and YouTube channels out there, and it’s a good place to begin if you’re starting up one of those platforms!
I’ve done a couple versions of this tag before, one being a two-birds-one-stone situation with a Wreck This Journal page from this past August (which you can watch HERE) and the other being from a Tumblr video challenge I did in 2011 (which you can watch HERE)
Both of the prompt lists I’m working through included variations of the WIMB tag (Blogtember: What’s in your bag? Pick it up and peruse its contents, then share with us! and 365 Blog Topic Ideas: What’s in your bag? (cosmetic bag, handbag, baby bag, travel bag)) , so instead of a video version, here’s a blog edition!
Back in February I wrote a wishlist post (you can read it HERE, if you like!) and the number one thing I was lusting over was the Dagne Dover 13″ Tote in Bleeker Blush. Shortly after I wrote that post they launched a contest where a pair of friends could win a set of their bags… fast forward a bit and cut to drumroll:
You cannot imagine how excited we were. We spent an embarrassing amount of time deliberating on which bags to choose (we were allowed any three each, excluding the leather bags). I’ll save more of this for a future post and go into the different bags more in detail, but I just wanted to give a bit of background on this precious baby.
The Dagne Dover 13″ Tote in Bleeker Blush is part of their classic year-round collection which includes five colours. The 13″ tote is one of the bigger bags in the line, with the 15″ tote being very similar but larger, and the (also 15″) Charlie tote being leather and deeper as opposed to wider.
Anyway, I’ve been using this tote as my school bag and I love it. The one thing I would note is that while my 13″ MacBook does fit in the 13″ tote (the sizes actually refer to the size of laptop they fit, not the actual dimensions of the bag) as intended, it becomes very tight for the rest of my stuff. I am definitely a Mary Poppins bag lady and as much as I love Tetris, I’m not crazy about such a tight squeeze with all my stuff, so if I’m bringing my laptop to school I’ll opt for the 15″ tote instead.
This tote is a beautiful shade of warm gray. The website describes it as a “blush tone gray” which I’d say is pretty accurate. In some lighting it appears more gray, while in others it leans more of a dusty mauve colour. The 13″ size fits comfortably on my shoulder with soft straps. It is made of a coated canvas which is practical and durable for the commute in rainy Vancouver, but has the appearance of Saffiano leather. It has a little loop on the side (appropriately shaped like a “D”) that you can hook your keys to. I’m still on the hunt for a cute keychain to go there. Am I a purse charm kind of person? This purse makes me want to be. This, as well as all the hardware on the bag, is 14k plated gold and a lovely contrast accent to the bag.The straps fold over (the straps on the 15″ tote do not) but they rest in this kind of awkward wing-like position unless I tuck them in. I’m not crazy about how the zip-up top doesn’t cover the whole bag so when it rains, some of my stuff gets wet. I understand why it’s done, to allow for a wider opening (and my straw peeks out) so when it rains I usually position it so that the non-water bottle side is open (my water bottle getting wet isn’t the end of the world) and the other (where my phone is) is under my arm.
Inside is my Mary Poppins bag of chaotic organization. What attracted me originally to Dagne Dover was all the pockets. I love big purses but hate digging around for stuff. Here, everything has its designated space from the laptop sleeve (which I use here for my iPad) the removable neoprene water bottle/ umbrella holder (GAME CHANGER) and so many other little useful pockets. Something I didn’t think I would like but ABSOLUTELY LOVE is the strap. It can be connected to one or both sides of the bag and can be used as a leash for your wallet or keys so instead of digging around for those crucial items, you can just pull on the strap and there you are. My transit pass is on the back of my wallet so it’s incredibly handy just being able to tug at the strap, pick it up, and be on my way.
You can see more of the various spaces for everything once the bag is empty. It’s so nice having all the options and the material of the bag is so forgiving and easy to clean. The laptop/ iPad sleeves are padded and the magnetic closure makes it feel secure and protected. I keep my phone on the side pocket (opposite to the water bottle holder) and it’s easy to take out and put back in even without unzipping the bag.
As you can see, it fits a LOT of stuff. Normally to fit all these “essentials” I would have to bring my giant JanSport backpack and look like an bipedal purple camel. Not the aesthetic I really want to give off, so Dagne Dover is literally the best of both worlds: cute and hella space.
So in my bag I have my Kate Spade spiral notebook that I use for… taking notes. It even says “take note” on the front in case I forget what it’s for. It was a Christmas gift from Erica this past year (thanks buddy)! I also have a Kate Spade pencil case with the glasses print. Inside is a couple of the gold pens, a pencil, and an eraser.
My phone is the iPhone 5s in silver and my case is… you guessed it, Kate Spade. I have my iPod (which I wrote a whole blog post about, if you would like to check that out) and I keep my phone charger in the little Lululemon gift card holder/ change purse thing.
My school water bottle is this gold stainless steel Starbucks tumbler that I got as a Christmas gift. I feel so uncomfortable if I don’t have water with me so I love having this and the designated space for it in the bag. I’m also obnoxious and love that the gold matches the hardware of the bag.
I keep carrots (random, I know) with me almost everywhere as a go-to snack since they’re compact and healthy and having them usually deters me from buying food at school. My sunglasses (and their case) stay in one of the side pockets of the bag, it’s so nice that they tuck in there so perfectly and I don’t have to worry about them taking up space on days when I don’t need them and then forget to put them back in and think “I should have brought my sunglasses today” when they’re sitting on my dresser.
My iPad is the third generation one (ironically named “The New iPad”) which came out in 2012. I usually bring this to class instead of my laptop. The case is a Kate Spade folio I got from the outlet, it’s one of my first Kate Spade purchases and still one of my favourites. It does add quite a bit of weight, but it’s totally worth it haha.
My Kate Spade wallet is attached to the little strap via a keychain. I love the small size and the window at the back where I keep my transit pass is so convenient!
I’m actually studying Romeo and Juliet in two of my classes this semester (and have to write both respective essays this week… ick) so I had the book in my bag as well.
Lastly I have my little purse pharmacy. The case was a gift but came from Sephora and I keep EVERYTHING in there. You can see my spare mascara, bandaids, Vaseline, dry shampoo, lotion, hand sanitizer, Aquaphor and a hair brush but that doesn’t even make a dent in the masses it contains.
Needless to say I adore this bag and it makes me feel less like a crazy bag lady because it’s organized and beyond adorable!
Just a quick note to mention that this is not a sponsored blog post. I received this bag as a contest prize, and I am not receiving any compensation for writing this. If you choose to purchase a Dagne Dover bag upon clicking one of the links directing you there from this post, I will receive a $25 credit towards products from their site. I totally understand if these sort of links make you uncomfortable, but it would mean so much to me if you choose to use them! I am not partnered with Dagne Dover (although I would love to be, haha) and everyone can get a link like this (https://www.talkable.com/x/VqsgrK) from their website, which you can use to be rewarded for sharing their bags as well! Using that link truly means a lot, especially if you found out about these bags through me! 🙂
The Dagne Dover 13″ tote in Bleeker Blush, as well as their other fantastic bags are available online at dagnedover.com! They just got some INSANELY beautiful new colours in for the summer so I definitely suggest checking them out!
