The most wonderful time of year is finally here… well, almost. It’s officially Autumn and while we’re still not quite in the sweater weather and cozy coat sweet spot, the air is a little more brisk and the leaves are a little more colourful… and I am so happy about it. When I received my Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box for October, I was excited to see that the theme is DIY Spa. One of my favourite things to do as the weather gets colder is to light candles and take long, relaxing baths so this is perfect!
The Simply Earth #eorecipebox is a monthly subscription service that provides four full size pure essential oils/ blends along with recipe cards and bonus items to create natural, toxin free products for your home. Simply Earth has been kind enough to send me their October box in exchange for my honest review. If you would like to see previous unboxing/ review posts I’ve done with SE, they are available HERE.
The four oils included in October’s DIY Spa Day themed box are:
Autumn Air: This is a brand new essential oil blend that is, as of the writing of this post, exclusive to the October Box and not individually listed on the website. I’m generally very wary of autumnal scents as I don’t really like cinnamon, but I was pleasantly surprised with this oil blend. Cassia is used instead of the go-to cinnamon. This gives it a lighter spicy scent balanced out by citrus and tree notes, which I love. (Not currently available for individual sale)
Mandarin: Botanical records show that Mandarin was cultivated in China as early as the 12th century BC. Mandarin Essential Oil can be used to soothe sore muscles, while its scent also has a relaxing and calming effect. (13.99 USD)
Breathe Easy: Breathe Easy is perfect for clearing congestion, allowing you to breathe easier. ($12.99 USD)
Eucalyptus: When first discovered in Australia, Eucalyptus treated everything from a cough to skin diseases. Eucalyptus leaves were minced to use for respiratory ailments, wounds, ulcers, aching joints, fevers, and dysentery. Today you could find Eucalyptus in cough syrups, toothpaste, and cosmetics. (10.99 USD)
(Descriptions are from Simply Earth’s website, aside from my description of Autumn Air.)
The extras in this box are a spray bottle, vegetable glycerin, and emulsifying wax, which are not presently available for individual purchase. The emulsifying wax makes it possible to mix oil and water while the vegetable glycerin is a natural moisturizing humectant.
The first recipe I made was “Exfoliating Body Polish”. I love body scrubs and was so excited to see this included. Of course, there are countless DIY body scrub recipes out there but having all the ingredients packaged for me (including the carrier oils from the Big Bonus Box. The only thing I have to provide is sugar, but I always have that on hand because I bake all. the. time.) makes it easy and convenient.
The recipe is straight forward and involves melting the emulsifying wax with oil in a double boiler. Once everything is combined, you remove the mixture from heat, add the oil and sugar and leave it to set.
I reused an empty container from a body polish that retails for almost $50 CAD at Sephora (I paid about $35 for mine, but still… it’s exorbitant haha) and actually ended up doubling the recipe because I was so excited about having a new body scrub. To put it in perspective: the whole #eorecipebox costs less than the single jar of a fancy body polish, but this one can be remade and customized based on your scent preferences! One of my favourite aspects about this subscription service is that you’re not just getting four products, but the ingredients and recipes that can be kept and used for much more than just the starting point provided by the recipe box. The world is truly your oyster!
I had my first fall bath last night complete with candles, Enola Holmes on Netflix, and the Exfoliating Body Polish that I made! It was the perfect mix of moisturizing and abrasive which made for a gloriously luxurious experience (without any guilt over the price!).
The Simply Earth recipe box is $39 USD a month (plus $9.99 shipping for Canadians) and you can use my code EHDREEAHNAHFREE to receive a $40 USD gift card for future purchases or your next box! Additionally, your first box (and every six thereafter) will include the Big Bonus Box for free (again, you can check out my unboxing of that HERE). Simply Earth also donates 13% of their proceeds to fight human trafficking, which you can learn more about on the “Our Cause” page on their website.
Thank you so much for checking out this post and to Simply Earth for sending me the October Box. I hope you have a great Autumn season and remember to take care of yourself!
